Your Child’s Birth Prayers at the Birth of a ChildWhen you begin calling all your family and friends to announce the entry of a new soul into this life, make sure to call the Church office or the priest as well! From the moment we enter this world, the Church is there for u s. The prayers on the day of birth are for the healing of the mother, the protection of the mother and child, and thanksgiving to God.
Prayers on the Eighth Day after Birth On the eighth day after a child is born, the priest may be invited to the home to say the prayers for the eighth day after birth. On this day, the child receives his or her name, just as Jesus was named by his mother and adoptive father on the eighth day after his birth.
Churching of the Mother and Child after Forty Days On the first Sunday after the fortieth day of birth, the mother and father bring the child to the narthex of the Church. This usually takes place at the beginning of the Divine Liturgy, but can also be arranged prior to Holy Communion if the mother so desires. Prayers are said for the mother and the child, after which the child is presented in the Church. This service recalls the presentation of Christ in the temple on the fortieth day. To make arrangements for the churching service, please contact Father Jerry
Your Child’s 40 Day Blessing Let us pray to the Lord. Lord have mercy. Lord God Almighty and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Creator of all things, we pray and ask that You preserve your servant ______________ who now enters Your Holy Church and account her worthy to receive your Holy Mysteries. In the fulfillment of the forty days, give her refuge in Your Holy Church so that she may glorify with all of us Your Holy Name, the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit, now and forever. Bless also this child born of her, whom You have brought into being and shown the light which bodily sense perceives. Give him/her an understanding and virtuous mind and allow him/her to be accounted worthy of the ideal Light of baptism and to become one of Your Holy flock. Lord Jesus Christ, on the fortieth day you were brought as a child by Mary into the Temple and received by the righteous Symeon. Lord, bless this child and protect him/her by the sign and power of Your precious Cross, for You are the One who guards infants, O Lord and we glorify, honor, and worship You, with Your eternal Father and All Holy and Life-giving Spirit, now and forever. The servant of God is churched, in the Name of the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit. I will go into Your House. I will worship in Your Holy Temple in fear of You. In the midst of the congregation I will sing praises to Yo. Lord, now let Your servant depart in peace according to Your word; for my eyes have seen Your salvation, which You have prepared before the face of all people, a light to lighten the Gentiles, and the glory of Your people Israel. Glory to You, O Lord, glory to You. May He who submitted to be carried in the arms of the righteous Symeon, Christ our true God, through the prayers of His Holy Mother and all the Saints, have mercy on us and save us as our good and loving God.
